RE: Peter is retiring -- join the celebration of his ministry

For twenty years, the Rev. Peter Sawtell has served as the Executive Director of Eco-Justice Ministries. Through those two decades he has powerfully reminded us of our interrelatedness and connection to the whole of Earth Community, and he has prophetically called out the environmental and economic assaults on our planet through the lens of Christian values.

Now he is retiring from Eco-Justice Ministries at the end of July. Endings are never easy, and it is with a sense of loss, leavened with deep gratitude, that we write to share the news of his retirement, and also that Eco-Justice Ministries will end our programming at that time. Each of you knows the value Peter and Eco-Justice Ministries have played in your own lives, the lives of your churches, or within the broader community. We invite you to share your personal reflections and expressions of celebration and thanks.

Because of the corona virus pandemic, plans for an in-person retirement celebration here in Denver have been postponed for now.  Instead, we will host Peter's Zoom Retirement Party on Sunday July 26! We'll be gathering on-line at two times that afternoon, at 2:00 and 5:00 Mountain time, with similar programs. We also will collect photos and written messages to Peter to put in a scrap book, and we invite you to send short video "send off messages" which we will weave together and play during the retirement party!

There are several ways you can participate:

  • RSVP for the Zoom party at with RSVP in the subject line. Please let us know which time (2:00 PM or 5:00 PM) would be most convenient. Please send your RSVP by July 15. We will send a Zoom link on July 23 to all who have let us know of their plan to attend.
  • Send digital photos and written messages for the scrapbook to with scrapbook in the subject line. Items sent by mail should be sent to Eco-Justice Ministries at 400 S Williams St, Denver, CO 80209. Please send items for the scrapbook by July 15.
  • We also invite short video messages. Videos may be sent as an email attachment to Please send videos by July 15. If you're recording a video, please try to have the camera at about eye level, and be sure that faces are well-lit. Using a landscape orientation is preferred. (If a video is to large to be attached to an email, we suggest that you use the free service of, designating as the recipient.)

Much of Peter's work over the years was in public settings, whether testifying before the Colorado Legislature, leading a seminar in Germany, preaching and teaching at congregations and conferences around the country, protesting fossil fuel development, or writing for publications. But Peter had a personal relationship with many of us as well. Eco-Justice Notes appeared without fail in our email inboxes every Friday, and it felt like a message from a personal friend.

During these two decades, Peter has spoken and written thoughtfully, prophetically, and passionately about the urgent challenges we face. Eco-Justice Ministries has been a national and international platform for faithful people to think and act -- to work for justice for all God's creation. The financial support that many of you have provided to Eco-Justice Ministries has helped make this possible. We are grateful for your partnership with us!

We hope you'll be able to join with us in celebrating Peter's ministry, and providing retirement greetings.
