Worship
If an eco-justice perspective is taken seriously, it will appear frequently in the worship life of a congregation. These links provide worship resources that can be used on a variety of occasions.

An Orthodox Liturgy
The late Patriarch Demetrios I of blessed memory made 1 September a day of special prayer and supplication for the Environment and commissioned the late Monk Gerasimos of the Skete of Little Saint Anne on the Holy Mountain of Athos to compose a special office for it. It is this office that is translated here.

Bulletin Series on Right Relationships
The Right Relationships Committee (of Catholic Community of Saint John Neumann) seeks to help people make the link between their faith and ecological responsibility. The Church seeks to promote and live a consistent ethic of life, recognizing that the integrity of the web of life and the promotion of human dignity are linked to the loving care and protection of God's creation. One major effort of the committee has been the writing of reflections on the Sunday readings for publication in the parish bulletin. These reflections link the readings for each Sunday to ecological responsibility.

Earth Day Resources for 2001
The Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches of Christ has prepared resources for Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, on the theme of Witnessing to the Resurrection: Caring for God's Creation

Soil and Water Stewardship Week
Soil and Water Stewardship Week is celebrated from the last Sunday in April to the first Sunday in May; its goal is to awaken in all Americans their responsibility to be thoughtful stewards of America's precious soil and water resources. It has been an annual program of the National Association of Conservation Districts since 1955. NACD publications include a "religious component" including worship materials for congregational use.

World YWCA-YMCA Week of Prayer and World Fellowship

Education
The educational ministries of the church provide many opportunities to explore our relationships with other people and with the whole of creation, and to address eco-justice issues. These links point toward specific curriculum resources and more general sites on educational approaches.

Affluenza
A one-hour video (originally aired on public TV) that does an excellent job of addressing the interaction of social values and social structures. Available through many denominational resource libraries.

New Models Exchange: Walking into Classroom Earth
This article describes a four week evening program called "Global Rx: A Prescription for the Future" which features four habitat rooms and a very interactive approach.

Stewardship of Creation and Religious Education

An extensive listing (about 38 pages) compiled by John B. Cobb, Jr. for the revised edition of Is It Too Late? A Theology of Ecology. It admits to being stronger on publications prior to 1992.

Enviromental Defense: "Scorecard" database
The Scorecard database allows users to get detailed data on many environmental hazards on state and county levels. Among the options are reports on air pollutants, lead hazards, land contamination (Superfund sites), and animal wastes from factory farms. Specialized reports detail risks by race, income, home ownership levels, etc. Check out what is in your zip code!

Environmental Organization Web Directory
An extensive and well-organized listing of web sites. Of special interest is the section on philosophy and ethics.

Sustainable Communities Network -- Justice and Equity
A listing of resources and organizations, generally dealing with the human justice issues related to environmental problems.

Religious Agencies
The agencies listed in this section work from a distinctly religious (usually Christian) stance as they deal with issues or themes important to eco-justice.

Alternatives for Simple Living
Alternatives is a non-profit organization that equips people of faith to challenge consumerism, live justly and celebrate responsibly. Started in 1973 as a protest against the commercialization of Christmas, their focus is on encouraging celebrations that reflect conscientious ways of living.

Catholic Conservation Center
This extensive site provides information about ecology, environmental justice, and the stewardship of creation in light of Scripture and Catholic Tradition.

The Center for Respect of Life and Environment
The work of the Center is to awaken people's ecological sensibilities and to transform lifestyles, institutional practices, and social policies to support the community of life. Their major programs identify approaches to economic and social development that recognize the links between ecology,spirituality, and sustainability.

Creation Stewardship in Central New York
This site for an ecumenical, regional effort has a fine collection of suggestions, articles and resources.

The Earth Charter Initiative
The Earth Charter sets forth fundamental ethical principles for a sustainable way of life.

Earth Ministry
A Seattle-based agency that engages individuals and congregations in knowing God more fully through deepening relationships wiht all of God's creation. They work toward transformations including simplified living, environmental stewardship, and justice for all creation.

Evangelical Environmental Network
The Evangelical Envrionmental Network is an evangelical ministry whose purpose is to "declare the Lordship of Christ over all creation" (Col. 1:15-20). One of the four member groups of the National Religious Partnership on the Environment, EEN is a network of individuals and organizations, including World Vision, World Relief, InterVarsity, and the International Bible Society.

Friends Committee on Unity with Nature

National Council of Churches, Eco-Justice Working Group
The Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches provides an opportunity for the national bodies of member Protestant and Orthodox denominations to work together to protect and restoreGod's creation.

National Religious Partnership on the Environment
An umbrella group which supports and coordinates environmental efforts in Catholic, Jewish, Evangelical and mainline Protestant traditions.

North American Coalition for Christianity and Ecology
The North American Coalition for Christianity and Ecology (NACCE) is an ecumenical, voluntary, tax-exempt organization. It was established in 1986 to encourage the many strands of Christian tradition in the work of healing the damaged earth, out of a common concern and love for God's creation.

People of Faith Network
The People of Faith Network is a national, multi-faith coalition, working to unite local congregations, clergy and faith-based activists to fight growing inequality and mean-spiritedness, which are linked to changes wroght by economic globalization.

Religious Witness for the Earth
Religious Witness for the Earth (RWE) is a national interfaith network dedicated to public witness in defense of Creation. Through prayer, education, and nonviolent action, we join hands to protect the Earth, our beloved home.

Restoring Eden
Christians for Environmental Stewardship - "Making your heart bigger, your hands dirtier, your voice stronger for God's creation"

Target Earth
Target Earth is a national movement of Christians motivated by the biblical call to be faithful stewards of everything God created -- to love our neighbors as ourselves and to care for the earth. Target Earth is active in 15 countries -- buying up endangered lands, protecting people, saving the jaguar, sharing the love of Jesus, feeding the hungry and reforesting ravaged terrain.

Theological Education to Meet the Environmental Challenge (TEMEC)
Theological Education to Meet the Environmental Challenge (TEMEC) seeks to make "eco-justice" - ecological integrity with social justice - a central focus of religious self-understanding; scholarship and teaching in higher education; and action at the personal, institutional, and social policy level.

Web of Creation
The Web of Creation was established to facilitate the movement for personal and social transformation to a just and sustainable world from religious perspectives. The site has a rich collection of resources and links, and is well-organized by theme and issues; it also hosts several other related organizations.

Creation Care for Pastors
This site provides resources for pastors who are interested in a growing emphasis within the Christian community called Creation Care. It is described as "Evangelicals & Scientists United to Protect Creation."

 

Secular Agencies
The agencies listed in this section work from a secular perspective on specific issues of the environment and/or social justice. As churches explore how their faith and mission relate to issues, these agencies are excellent sources of information and have well-established programs for action and involvement.

Co-op America's mission is to harness economic power - the strength of consumers, investors, businesses and the marketplace - to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society.

Defenders of Wildlife

Earth Day Network
The international project to organize Earth Day observations.

Forests.org
The mission of Forests.org is to contribute to ending deforestation, preserving old-growth forests, conserving all forests, maintaining climatic systems and commencing the age of ecological restoration. An extensive site with both scientific and advocacy sections.

Global Exchange
Global Exchange is an international human rights organization dedicated to promoting environmental, political and social justice. They are deeply involved in Fair Trade efforts.

Global Response
Global Response organizes letter-writing campaigns around environmental and eco-justice issues around the world. Their materials are prepared to inform and involve children, youth and adults.

Global Witness
Global Witness is a nonprofit organization that investigates connections between environmental and human rights abuses, particularly where natural resources such as timber, diamonds and oil are used to fund conflict.

Greenpeace

Green Scissors
Since 1994, the Green Scissors Campaign, led by Friends of the Earth, Taxpayers for Common Sense and U.S. Public Interest Research Group, has been working with Congress and the Administration to end environmentally harmful and wasteful spending. Working to breach party lines, the Green Scissors Campaign has helped cut more the $24 billion in environmental wasteful programs from the federal budget.

National Audubon Society
The mission of the National Audubon Society is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

National Wildlife Federation
The National Wildlife Federation is the nation's largest member-supported conservation group, uniting individuals, organizations, businesses and government to protect wildlife, wild places, and the environment.

Sierra Club
The Sierra Club has chapters across the US, with many options for outings, education and activism

Union of Concerned Scientists
Works on agriculture, arms control, energy, and transportation issues to create a secure and sustainable world.

US Climate Action Network
dealing with global warming issues

The Wilderness Society
The Wilderness Society works to protect America's wilderness and to develop a nation-wide network of wild lands through public education, scientific analysis and advocacy.

The Wildlands Project
An organization guiding the design of a continental wilderness recovery strategy; drafting a blueprint for an interconnected continental-scale system of protected wildlands linked by habitat corridors.
